Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL)

HGP Initial (4-hour): $150

HQL

During this 4-hour class, we will go over legal aspects of gun ownership in MD, safe handling of a firearm, fundamentals of shooting, maintenance of a firearm, and home firearm safety. This course does include a brief visit to a range for live fire.

Sadly, the HQL has not been struck by Maryland law yet. 

A person may not purchase, rent, or receive a handgun after October 1, 2013 unless they possess a valid Handgun Qualification License (HQL) issued by the Maryland State Police or qualify for exemption status. 

• All classroom materials will be provided.
• Students will be provided with appropriate tools to use during the range portion of the class.
• Drinks and snacks.
• This course includes a live-fire segment. Students will be provided with the appropriate tools to complete it. 

• Students are welcome to bring their firearms for the live-fire portion of this course. 
  • Please bring at least 50 rounds of ammunition appropriate to your firearm.
  • Please ensure that the firearm is unloaded and made into a safe condition before coming to class.
• Students are welcome to bring their own hearing protection and eye protection.
• Students should bring writing utensils and a notebook or paper for notes if they would like.

1. Besides the requirement to have an HQL to purchase a regulated firearm in MD, getting your HQL has no added perks, as a background check is still completed when purchasing a regulated firearm.
